Meet the Team

Allison Day - Principal

Like many of our students, I decided to fulfil a lifelong dream and trained in beauty when my son was still little. He is now a strapping chap in his twenties, and things have moved on somewhat. On leaving college, I built up experience working in various salons, and in my own home salon. I then went on to gain my teaching and assessing qualifications and worked as a lecturer at South Downs college and various private training schools. Standards varied greatly, and I was given valuable insight into what makes a great training school - and what does not!

In 2006 I set up The Southern School of Beauty Therapy. Obtaining accreditation with VTCT was a high priority. I wanted our courses to meet and exceed industry guidelines, and their assistance was invaluable. Initially I taught nearly all the classes, with Angela as my right hand woman, taking care of all the administration, but as the business took off, our workforce gradually expanded, and we are now in the happy position of having a team of the most amazing, highly skilled instructors.

Angela Marshman - Office Manager

Angela is the first point of contact for our students. She has excellent organisational capabilities from her years of experience in banking and school admin and is a mine of information.

Angela takes care of all our students, whether it be booking them in on a course, or making them a cup of tea when they arrive.

She has a very kind and genuine nature, and is a real asset to SSBT.

Liz McCue - Instructor

Teaches body massage, hot stones, Indian head massage, thai herbal compress, facials, manicure & pedicure.
Liz originally trained as a beauty therapist 22 years ago. She was part owner of a successful salon for 10 years and has been teaching and assessing in various local colleges for about the same amount of time.

Liz currently teaches yoga and is in her third year of study to become a Homeopath. Liz has a special interest in holistic courses and manages to impart her substantial knowledge with humour and enthusiasm.

Alex Spice - Instructor

Teaches waxing, spray tanning, lash extensions, manicure and pedicure.
Alex qualified in 2002 from Basingstoke College in beauty therapy and hairdressing, then in 2009 completed her teaching qualifications. After leaving college Alex worked in various local salons, and built up her own very successful home based salon which she still runs today, in between managing her growing young family.

Alex has a fun and enthusiastic manner and has a good understanding of what is needed to work in a fast paced, commercial environment, which she manages to pass on to our students during training.

Karen Lockyer - Instructor

Teaches cosmetic make up.
Karen trained over 20 years ago as a beauty therapist at Champneys Health Farm and got a good grounding in the world of beauty working in various salons and health clubs throughout London. Having decided that make up was her vocation she did her apprenticeship working as an assistant at London Fashion week and on numerous pop promos and fashion shoots.

Karen has since gone on to work for magazines, fashion shows, celebrity shoots and travelled the world using her skills. Karen has taught at the London College of fashion and currently teaches photographic make up at a private London make up school. Karen also runs two successful businesses - FabFace and Hairspray and Lipstick - providing hair and make up teams for events.

Zasha Mitchell - Instructor

Teaches acrylic nail extensions, gel nail extensions and nail art.
Zasha worked as a dental nurse for 14 years, but after a lifetime interest in nails, qualified with VTCT as a nail technician in 2007.

Zasha set up her own salon - Flash as Nails, which through word of mouth grew to the business she has today with over 400 clients. She is now in the position of having to take on staff to cope with the ever expanding business, but luckily still finds time to come and teach at SSBT. Zasha completed her teacher training in 2010. She is passionate about all things nails, and has a natural ability to pass on her wealth of experience and knowledge in a down to earth and friendly manner.

Jennie Smith - Instructor & Mentor

Teaches - eyebrow enhancement, gel/polish and mentor for waxing and manicure & pedicure practice days.
Jennie's journey within the beauty industry began as a student at The Southern School of Beauty. Having obtained her VTCT qualifications in both beauty therapy and massage, she set herself up in a home based treatment room which she continues to run today. Always keen to acquire new skills, she widened her knowledge further by training in Advanced Waxing, plus various branded training such as Artistic, Gelish, 3D brows etc and then later spent time in France enhancing her skills in a bi-lingual capacity, under the watchful eye of a beauty mentor during a short internship.

Ever passionate and determined to try and 'put something back' Jennie qualified as an instructor and has now come full circle, returning to the Southern School of Beauty as a trainer, imparting her knowledge and experience to new and returning students.

Miriam King - Instructor and Mentor

Teaches - airbrush, wedding, vintage and special occasion makeup.
Miriam King is a fully qualified makeup artist and stylist. She studied at the London College of Fashion and the Absolute Image Academy.

As a makeup artist, some of her clients include The Sun newspaper, ID Magazine and Rare Moments Photography.

The majority of her work is weddings, vintage and special occasion makeup. She also is trained in airbrush makeup application.
